Meerut Metro, Part of Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor, Completes Trials and is Ready for Rollout.

The trial runs for the 23-km Meerut metro-cum-rapid rail corridor have been successfully completed, and the line is now poised for a swift rollout. This section of the Namo Bharat network will drastically cut the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just 55 minutes, providing seamless high-speed connectivity for commuters.

The regional rapid transit system is already operational on a 55-km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South, part of its total 82-km route. The corridor opened in stages, starting with the Sahibabad to Duhai Depot section in October 2023, followed by subsequent phases that extended the line to Meerut South and New Ashok Nagar.

Key Features of the Meerut Metro

The Meerut Metro is a groundbreaking project, as it's the first in India to integrate a local metro system with a regional rapid transit line on the same infrastructure. The 23-km corridor features 13 stations, with four—Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Meerut Central, and Begumpul—being shared with the rapid rail corridor to ensure seamless interchange.

The new trainsets are designed for enhanced passenger comfort and convenience, offering:

  • Seating: 2x2 transverse and longitudinal seating, unlike the Delhi Metro.

  • Accessibility: Provisions for wheelchairs and medical stretchers.

  • Amenities: Air-conditioning, luggage racks, and USB charging ports.

  • Technology: Regenerative braking systems and advanced safety features like Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Control (ATC), and Automatic Train Operation (ATO).

Each three-car train can carry over 700 passengers and will run at a frequency of 10 minutes. The trains have a maximum operational speed of 120 km/h and a design speed of 135 km/h.

While there is no official confirmation, the Sarai Kale Khan station, one of the corridor's largest, is expected to open to commuters next week. Once the entire Meerut corridor is operational, the journey from Ghaziabad rapid rail station to Meerut South will take just 25 minutes.
