Meerut Metro Trial Run Kicks Off, Aims to Alleviate Delhi Road Traffic.

The trial run of the Meerut metro commenced recently, marking a significant milestone for the city’s transportation infrastructure. The trial, conducted at a nominal speed, runs between Meerut South (the first station when traveling from Delhi) and Meerut Central station, with NCRTC officials overseeing the operation.

According to officials, the metro service is expected to ease congestion on the heavily trafficked Delhi-Meerut road, which serves as a major route for vehicles traveling to and from Modi Nagar, Ghaziabad, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. The area is home to numerous showrooms, factories, and MSME businesses, making transportation a daily challenge for residents.

Rajveer Rathore, a local from Delhi Road, emphasized the benefit the metro will bring. “Residents have relied on UPSRTC buses to travel to Delhi, but the metro will provide a much-needed alternative and improve overall mobility,” he said.

During the trial run, the metro's speed varied between 40 to 135 kmph to assess safety, ride comfort, and system integration. NCRTC's Chief Public Relations Officer, Puneet Vats, confirmed that civil construction work is nearly complete, with the metro set to be operational by the end of the year. The metro will connect with the Namo Bharat (RRTS) semi-high-speed train network at key stations.

The Meerut metro stations, being built with a distinctive design, feature two platforms and four railway tracks—one for the city’s metro and the other for the Namo Bharat rapid transit system. This setup, claimed to be the first of its kind in India, ensures seamless connectivity between the two services. Four stations are designated as common for both the metro and Namo Bharat trains, offering passengers easy access to both systems.

Vats explained that a synchronization plan will be developed to ensure smooth operations without interruptions. For instance, passengers traveling from Partapur Station to Delhi will be able to catch the Namo Bharat train at Meerut South, streamlining their journey.

The 23-kilometer Meerut metro route, of which 10 kilometers are elevated and 3 kilometers underground, will run from Meerut South to the Modipuram Depot, towards Muzaffarnagar. The project includes 13 stations designed to enhance intercity travel.
