Commuters in Kanpur and Agra can anticipate a significant upgrade to their urban transportation systems, with both cities' metro rail projects steadily advancing towards operational status by the end of the current year.
In Kanpur, the crucial 6.7-kilometer underground section of the primary corridor, linking Central and Moti Jheel, has now been successfully completed. Overall, the entire corridor has achieved a substantial milestone of over 70 percent completion. Simultaneously, the metro project in Agra has reached the halfway mark, with 50 percent of the work finished on its 14.27-kilometer route connecting Sikandra to the iconic Taj East Gate.
Parallel progress is being made on the second corridors in both cities, with current projections indicating completion by December 2026. These expansions will complement the existing metro services operational in neighboring Lucknow, Noida, and Ghaziabad, further strengthening regional connectivity.
Recent assessments conducted by the housing and urban planning department indicate that Kanpur's primary corridor has reached a 72 percent completion rate, while Agra's initial route stands at 52 percent.
Construction on Kanpur's IIT Kanpur to Naubasta corridor is proceeding at a consistent pace. Following the successful completion of the underground segment between Kanpur Central and Moti Jheel, efforts are now focused on achieving the 2025 operational target for the broader corridor, where a 15-kilometer section is already serving passengers.
The second corridor in Kanpur, spanning 8.6 kilometers from Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture to Barra, incorporates both underground and elevated sections. Tunnel boring work continues between Rawatpur and Double Pulia, and a significant milestone was recently achieved with the installation of the first pier cap near Company Bagh Chauraha.
In Agra, the first corridor, now 52 percent complete, already operates on a 6-kilometer stretch connecting key tourist destinations. Underground testing between Bijli Ghar and RBS College has been successfully conducted across four stations.
The second corridor in Agra, an elevated route stretching 15.4 kilometers from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar, is demonstrating steady progress in the construction of piers and spans. Station construction has also commenced at various points along the vital MG Road. Upon their completion, these metro developments are poised to significantly enhance local transportation infrastructure and bolster tourism in both historic cities.
