MG Motor to Establish Battery Assembly at Halol Plant
MG Motor India, the automaker known for its focus on electric vehicles (EVs), is considering the assembly of batteries and repair services at its manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat. The company plans to collaborate with third parties to delve into battery cell manufacturing.
Rajeev Chaba, CEO Emeritus of MG Motor India, stated, "With a commitment to electric vehicles, we aim to explore battery assembly and repair at our plant, while also venturing into cell manufacturing through partnerships to advance sustainability efforts." Chaba added that specific plans for manufacturing hydrogen cell fuel and other technologies would be disclosed as developments unfold.
In response to increased demand, MG Motor India is evaluating options to expand its Halol plant. Chaba highlighted, "We are assessing opportunities to augment capacity and streamline operations to meet market demands."
Last year, MG Motor India announced a significant investment of ₹5,000 crore as part of its India 3.0 plan. This investment is earmarked for expanding manufacturing facilities in Halol and creating job opportunities for approximately 20,000 employees, both directly and indirectly.
Moreover, the company is planning to establish a second manufacturing unit in Gujarat, aimed at boosting its production capacity to accommodate up to 3 lakh vehicles.
The electric vehicle segment constitutes up to 30 per cent of MG Motor India's overall sales. Under the MG Charge initiative, the company has already set up 500 charging points across various locations such as residential societies, hotels, educational institutions, and private apartments, with plans to increase the number to 1,000 within 1,000 days.
Additionally, JSW has acquired a 35 per cent stake in MG Motor India. Looking ahead, the company aims to collaborate with domestic players to further enhance operational capabilities. Chaba noted the growing trend of foreign automakers seeking partnerships with Indian companies to leverage local expertise and navigate regulatory complexities, indicating potential for further collaborations and acquisitions within the Indian automobile industry.
