Mumbai Inaugurates First Cable-Stayed Rail Overbridge at Reay Road.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently inaugurated Mumbai's first cable-stayed railway over bridge (RoB) located at Reay Road. Constructed at a cost of ₹266 crore, the new bridge is a significant infrastructure upgrade for the city. During the event held in the Byculla east area, the Chief Minister also virtually inaugurated another RoB at Titwala in neighbouring Thane district via video link.

The new six-lane cable-stayed RoB at Reay Road replaces an old British-era bridge built in 1910. Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that the old structure had completed its codal life and was causing difficulties for commuters, necessitating its reconstruction. He praised the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as MahaRail, for completing the task in "record time" without causing traffic disruptions.

The contract for the reconstruction of the Reay Road bridge was awarded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to MahaRail, a joint venture of the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Railways. The 385-metre-long cable-stayed bridge features two ramps on either side of the railway line. It serves as an important east-west connector on the Sant Savata Mali Marg, spanning the Harbour line railway corridor between Reay Road and Dockyard Road stations, and also passes beneath the Eastern Freeway.

Adding a modern touch, the Reay Road RoB is Mumbai's first cable-stayed railway overbridge and has been adorned with architectural LED lighting. Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, Managing Director of MahaRail, stated that these newly constructed RoBs are designed to enhance road safety and alleviate traffic congestion in their respective areas, thereby contributing to a more seamless, faster, and efficient transportation experience for commuters. "The Reay Road RoB is Mumbai's first cable-stayed bridge, constructed by MahaRail. These RoBs are essential for enhancing connectivity, safety and efficiency of Mumbai's transportation network," he added.

In Thane district, the four-lane RoB at the new Titwala railway station was constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This 820-metre-long overbridge is located on the Kalyan Ring Road, between Titwala and Khadavli railway stations on the Central Railway's Kalyan-Igatpuri section. Built at a cost of ₹100.06 crore, the Titwala RoB is intended to connect Ambivili to Kalyan, providing connectivity via the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir at Titwala.

MahaRail is undertaking extensive work across Maharashtra, currently constructing more than 200 railway overbridges and underbridges (RuBs). The corporation has so far commissioned 32 RoBs as part of these broader infrastructure development efforts.
