Mumbai Port Authority has announced plans to develop a marina in the sea using its own funds, moving away from its earlier proposal to build it on land via a public-private partnership (PPP). Chairman Rajiv Jalota confirmed that the new project will be undertaken as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) initiative, with studies already at an advanced stage and clearances expected soon.
Previously, the marina was slated to be constructed at the port’s Princess Dock, designed to accommodate at least 300 pleasure boats and yachts. The authority had issued tenders twice for the PPP project, but received no bids. The earlier plan required the successful bidder to invest ₹575.19 crore for the development over 9.02 hectares.
Recognizing the limited scope for expanding cargo activities due to logistical challenges, the port authority aims to repurpose the waterfront for leisure activities, aligning with the broader Mumbai waterfront regeneration initiative. The port's land, primarily located in premium South Mumbai, is expected to hold significant economic value.
Despite India's extensive coastline of over 7,500 kilometers, the country has very few marinas for luxury yachts and pleasure boats. The demand for such facilities in Mumbai is evident, with around 200 small leisure boats often moored near the iconic Gateway of India.
The marina project is seen as a vital opportunity to enhance tourism by sea, promoting the city's historical and cultural significance while catering to the needs of private yacht owners. The port authority envisions the marina as a premier destination, equipped with world-class services to foster growth in the region.
