Construction on Nagpur Metro Phase 2 is accelerating, with significant advancements being made on the 18.5 km Butibori stretch, the longest section of this phase featuring ten stations. Officials report rapid development across civil works, infrastructure integration, and crucial coordination with national agencies.
A major boost to the project's pace comes from the newly established casting yard at Dongargaon. This facility will be instrumental in the production of concrete segments required for the Reach 1 viaduct, facilitating faster execution of elevated track works. MahaMetro officials have confirmed that work at this casting yard is progressing swiftly.
Geotechnical surveys along Wardha Road are nearing completion, and all necessary technical drawings, including the viaduct elevation from road level, have been finalized, a senior official confirmed.
A critical aspect of the Butibori stretch is the seamless integration of Metro construction with the realignment of National Highway 44 (NH-44). The Metro line will extend from Khapri – currently the last operational station on the North-South corridor – towards the Butibori MIDC industrial estate, traversing directly through the middle of NH-44. This necessitates shifting the existing highway alignment by 2.5 meters to the left from Jamtha over a 10 km stretch, as reported by TOI on February 21.
Formalities between MahaMetro and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for this realignment have been successfully completed. NHAI has coordinated with MahaMetro to widen the highway, ensuring balanced space on both sides for future expansion to six lanes without the need for private land acquisition. Once the road widening is complete, the Metro will be constructed on a new centerline on the elevated viaduct.
Simultaneously, progress is being made on the ground-level section beyond Khapri, where approximately 2 km of at-grade track is being laid before the Metro transitions onto Wardha Road. Slabs for two crucial at-grade stations – Metro City and Eco Park – have already been completed, with utility shifting in their final stages.
The alignment also involves crossing a railway line, for which MahaMetro has submitted a proposal to railway authorities and is awaiting approval.
Furthermore, tree-cutting permissions for the Jamtha–Butibori corridor have been secured and are almost completed, paving the way for the road widening and essential utility works. Five of the ten stations planned in this phase are strategically located on NHAI land, making continued close coordination between the agencies paramount for the project's smooth execution.
