Nashik: Forest department comes up with 2 BHK houses for personnel.

The Nashik (west division) forest department has taken up a residential project for foresters and forest guards deep inside forest areas bordering the neighbouring state of Gujarat.

While four such houses have been constructed in Surgana taluka, the remaining five will come up at Trimbakeswar and Igatpuri talukas of the district. The state government has provided around Rs. 3 crore for the project under its Compensatory Afforestation Fund.

The deputy conservator of forest (Nashik West), Pankaj Garg, told TOI that these newly constructed 2 BHK houses have provisions for water and electricity.

“We have developed these houses on a cluster basis inside the forest where at least two-three houses would be located. Foresters and forest guards can stay with their families there. Wireless sets too will be provided to them so that they can be in touch with the district headquarters and their seniors,” added Garg.

A forest department official said the idea was to keep these staffers deep inside the forest, so that they could keep a tab on the illegal felling of trees and inter-state smuggling of costly logs. “Moreover, they can interact with the locals of the nearby villages on various issues related to forest cover,” added Garg.

Department insiders said earlier too there were dwellings inside the forests for the forest personnel to stay. “But such dwellings were bereft of water and electricity, due to which the personnel did not want to stay there. After deliberating on the issue, the department decided to have new spacious houses with basic amenities so that they can stay with their families,” an official in the department said.
