"NCRTC completes Delhi-Meerut road widening and restoration."
A 9.3-km stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Road, between Meerut Tiraha and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Duhai on Delhi’s border, has been handed over to the Public Works Department (PWD) following the completion of reconstruction and widening works, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) said recently.
The NCRTC, which had been responsible for the upkeep of the road since 2018 during construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, undertook comprehensive restoration and widening of the heavily trafficked stretch to improve commuter safety and convenience. The agency also constructed nearly 6 km of drains to provide a permanent solution for drainage and sewerage, addressing frequent waterlogging issues during the monsoon.
The road, previously 7 metres wide, has been expanded to 10.5 metres on both carriageways, a move expected to enhance traffic flow and safety. The stretch passes through densely populated areas with heavy vehicle movement, which had frequently affected road conditions. NCRTC officials said special safety measures, including barricading along the median, were implemented during construction, as much of the Namo Bharat corridor runs along the road median.
To minimise disruption, the road was widened on both sides to allow smooth vehicle movement during construction. Service lanes have also been added near the entry and exit points of Namo Bharat stations to ensure safe passenger access while maintaining traffic flow.
The agency said the project included aesthetic improvements, such as a green belt in place of conventional dividers beneath the Namo Bharat viaduct, enhancing visual appeal and reducing glare from oncoming vehicles.
Namo Bharat train services on the corridor began in October 2023 and were extended to Meerut South in August 2024. Since then, road stretches along the corridor have been handed back to respective authorities in phases. The newly restored and widened Meerut Tiraha–Duhai section is now open for public use.
