NH-338 Melur-Karaikudi Highway Stretch Set for Completion Soon

The four-laning of the 45-km Melur-Karaikudi section of National Highway 338 is nearing completion, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirming that the main carriageway works have been completed across most of the corridor. Final finishing and ancillary works are currently under way before the highway is opened for full operations.

The ₹1,130-crore project starts at Melur near Madurai and passes through Keelavalavu and Pillayarpatti before terminating at Karaikudi. Executed under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly improve connectivity for residents travelling between Madurai and Sivaganga districts for employment, education, healthcare and commercial activities.

The widened corridor is likely to ease congestion caused by existing two-lane stretches, busy junctions and slow-moving vehicles, providing smoother travel between Madurai, Karaikudi and villages along the route.

A senior NHAI regional officer in Madurai said the four-lane highway would serve as a key arterial link, connecting the Tiruchirappalli-Karaikudi National Highway (NH-210), the Thanjavur-Pudukottai-Manamadurai National Highway (NH-226) and State Highway 35 near Tirupattur.

The project is also expected to benefit thousands of devotees travelling to the Pillayarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple and other heritage destinations in Madurai and Sivaganga districts.

Regular visitor N Praveen said the current journey from Madurai to Pillayarpatti often takes more than two hours, especially during weekends, due to congestion near Melur, Keelavalavu and village junctions. He added that narrow stretches frequently cause buses and cars to slow down behind heavy vehicles.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time, lower fuel consumption and improve access to hospitals, educational institutions, markets and government offices. It will also support better bus connectivity and smoother movement of goods between the two districts.

With the main road works largely complete, focus will now shift to completing junction improvements, service roads, lighting, pedestrian crossings and access points for villages located along the highway.
