NTPC Group’s Installed Capacity Rises to 89,378 MW After Tehri Pumped Storage Project Milestone.
India’s largest integrated power utility NTPC Limited has achieved a major milestone after its group capacity rose to 89,378 MW, following the successful commissioning of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) project.
The achievement comes after THDC India Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC, declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the fourth and final 250 MW unit of the 1,000 MW (4x250 MW) Tehri PSP. The unit is scheduled to begin commercial operations from 00:00 hours on April 12, 2026, making the entire project fully operational.
With the commissioning of this final unit, the Tehri PSP—designed as a large-scale energy storage facility using pumped storage technology—has become fully functional. The project acts like a “giant battery” for the northern grid, providing peak power support and helping balance electricity supply amid rising integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
Following this development, NTPC Group’s consolidated capacity has been revised upward to 89,378 MW, while its total commercial capacity now stands at 88,298 MW.
The company said the milestone reinforces its leadership in India’s power sector and reflects its ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix through its subsidiaries, particularly in flexible and renewable-supporting infrastructure.
