Odisha's Housing and Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mohapatra, announced on Thursday that the state's metro rail project will be extended to Cuttack's SCB Medical College and Hospital, with crucial financial support from the central government. This expansion aims to significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility for the large number of people who visit the hospital daily.
Minister Mohapatra expressed concerns about the previous BJD government's initial plan, which proposed a metro line from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia, a location situated between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. "What will people do after arriving at Trisulia?" he questioned, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive and practical approach.
In response, the new state government has decided to extend the metro line into Cuttack, encompassing the city's bus terminal and the vital SCB Medical College and Hospital. To determine the most efficient route for this extension, a special committee comprising top officials, including Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, and experts has been formed.
Based on the committee's findings, a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared to incorporate the extended metro line. Minister Mohapatra also confirmed that the central government has pledged its support for funding the project, demonstrating a collaborative effort to improve infrastructure in the region.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi's government has prioritized the metro expansion, ensuring its swift execution. The initial phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro project, a 26-kilometer stretch from BPIA to Trisulia, was planned by the previous BJD government at an estimated cost of ₹6,225 crore. Work on this phase commenced on November 20, 2023, with a targeted completion date of 2027. This newly announced extension to Cuttack signifies a significant enhancement to the project, promising improved transportation and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
