Pilot Plant for Rare Earth Permanent Magnets Established at ARCI Hyderabad.

The International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has established a pilot plant for the manufacture of Nd-Fe-B (Neodymium-Iron-Boron) rare earth permanent magnets.

The facility was inaugurated on Friday by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, along with Dr. R. Vijay, Director of ARCI. The plant adopts a comprehensive end-to-end approach, covering the entire process from strip-cast alloy production to finished sintered magnets. This integrated setup is expected to foster the development of a robust and self-reliant manufacturing ecosystem in India.

The pilot plant represents a major step toward achieving self-reliance in critical materials and strengthening India’s role in the global rare earth value chain. Nd-Fe-B magnets are key components in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing technologies.

With this initiative, ARCI aims to support domestic production and reduce dependence on imports for these strategically important materials.
