Piyush Goyal announces 2,000 MW solar project for Punjab.

Minister of state for power, coal and renewable energy Piyush Goyal recently said the Centre has decided to set up a 2,000 MW solar power plant in Punjab on the request of state's chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Goyal was speaking to reporters after a meeting with Badal, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the state's non-conventional energy minister Bikram Singh Majithia. The meeting was called to discuss Punjab's power sector reforms and efforts to increase the state's power generation capacity.

Goyal said state-run power generator NTPCBSE 0.83 % will buy half of the 2,000 MW solar power produced in Punjab. Badal told the Union minister that his government would soon give a detailed proposal on its plan to install 100 MW solar panels on rooftops of government buildings.
