The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics manufacturing has attracted ₹10,213 crore in cumulative investments as of December 2024, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha.
Under the scheme, total production has reached ₹6,62,247 crore, generating 1,37,189 direct jobs, the minister said in a written reply. Mobile phone production has surged from 60 million units in 2014-15 to 330 million units in 2023-24, a more than fivefold increase. In value terms, production has grown from ₹19,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹4,22,000 crore in 2023-24, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41%.
“Due to the government’s policies, India has transitioned from a mobile phone importing nation in 2014-15 to an exporter,” Prasada stated. Mobile phone exports have jumped from ₹22,868 crore in 2020-21 to ₹1,29,074 crore in 2023-24, growing at a CAGR of 78%. In 2015, 74% of mobile phones sold in India were imported; today, 99.2% of handsets used in the country are domestically manufactured.
India has also begun producing critical electronic components such as batteries, chargers, PCBAs, camera modules, and display panels. "This indicates that a complete mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem is developing in India, with both existing players expanding and new entrants exploring the market," the minister noted.
Domestic manufacturers under the PLI scheme have invested ₹787 crore, producing ₹34,111 crore worth of goods and creating 25,288 direct jobs. Given the scheme’s strong performance, no changes are planned at present.
Launched in 2020 as part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, the PLI scheme aims to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract foreign investment, boost exports, and reduce import dependency.
