Proposal of 4000 MW Surguja UMPP may get a new lease of life.

Times of India reported that the proposal to set up 4000 MW ultra mega power project at Surguja in Chhattisgarh may get a new lease of life. The Centre is likely to work for finding a way to bring this derailed project back on track.

Indications to this effect came after Mr. Raman Singh, CM of Chhattisgarh, presented a detailed note on this project to PM Mr. Naredra Modi on June 10th.

The ambitious power project had got stuck due to denial of 'forest clearance' to 2 captive coal blocks during the UPA government. Categorization of forest cover as 'go' and 'no-go' areas, depending on density of forest, had come as a major stumbling block in the project's clearance in the forest rich state.

An official said that 'Officials of power and environment ministry will soon hold a meeting to find out how the tricky issue of forest clearance to such an important project is resolved. There is also an option to allocate different coal blocks to the proposed plant.'
