Pune metro's Swargate to Katraj extension gets state government's nod.

The state government recently approved the Pune Metro’s Swargate-Katraj extension project. It will be underground covering 5.4km with three proposed stations and executed by MahaMetro.

The Pune Municipal Corporation had submitted a proposal to the state government after it received a detailed project report from MahaMetro. The project will now go to the Union government. If approved, the deadline for the project is slated for April 2027.

MahaMetro is already constructing the PCMC building to Swargate line which has an underground section between Shivajinagar and Swargate. The new line is expected to benefit citizens from Padmavati, Gultekdi, Market Yard, Dhankawdi, Bibvewadi, Balajinagar, Sainathnagar, Katraj and Ambegaon.

It is a Rs. 3,668 crore project. The state government will chip in with Rs. 891 crore, PMC will contribute Rs. 655 crore and the state will approach the Centre for Rs. 300 crore. MahaMetro will raise funds of Rs. 1,803 crore through soft loans.

PMC sources said that the civic administration has submitted proposals of extensions to MahaMetro and to the state government. The Swargate-Katraj proposal was sanctioned at a general body meeting held during the pandemic.

A MahaMetro official said, “The state government’s nod is welcome. The proposal has to go through various levels of approvals at the Centre and get technical nods. We are ready to offer all assistance. Actual work will begin only after necessary approvals,” the official added.
