"Pune's Nigdi, Katraj Metro Extension Plans Gain Momentum with Rs. 839 Crore Allocation"

Pune's metro connectivity is set to expand significantly with the Maharashtra government’s allocation of Rs. 838.96 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The funds will primarily support the ongoing and planned extensions of the metro network, including the PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj routes, along with completing the remaining sections of phase-1.

Maha Metro officials have confirmed that the bulk of the funds will be directed toward these key extensions, in addition to finishing phase-1 routes. The funds include contributions from the Union government and will be disbursed based on project progress and requirements.

With this substantial allocation, metro works across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are accelerating, ensuring the project remains on track without facing financial delays. In October 2024, the full opening of the PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi metro routes took place, while ongoing works at Khadki and Range Hills stations continue.

Groundbreaking has already commenced on the Pimpri-Nigdi extension, and groundwork for the Swargate-Katraj underground metro route is expected to start in the next two to three months. Officials stated that funds will be prioritized for these critical works to extend metro reach to more localities across both cities, with the Pimpri-Nigdi stretch expected to be completed in the next two and a half years.

In January, daily ridership on the two fully operational routes reached 1.60 lakh, connecting the east-west and north-south areas of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. However, commuters have expressed a need for improved last-mile connectivity. Santosh Sakhare, a Nagar Road resident, suggested that funds should be allocated to procure midi buses for shorter routes connecting metro stations.

Maha Metro is also prioritizing enhancements in last-mile connectivity and is pushing for faster completion of studies on newly proposed metro routes.

In addition to metro funding, the Centre has allocated Rs 230 crore for the Mula-Mutha pollution abatement project for the 2025-26 fiscal. The project has also received a Rs 990.26 crore loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which will be routed through the central government. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has secured nearly Rs 300 crore in funding, with another Rs 100 crore expected soon. These funds will help accelerate work on sewage treatment plants (STPs), with plans to sanction ten STPs by December.

Despite delays in 2024, PMC officials are optimistic that the flow of funds will help meet the city’s infrastructure goals in the coming months.
