Rural roads in Bihar will be free of potholes by June 2025, announced state Rural Works Department (RWD) Minister Ashok Choudhary on Friday. Speaking at a press conference, Choudhary emphasized the government's commitment to improving rural connectivity and road infrastructure.
The minister outlined the efforts under the Mukhyamantri Gram Sampark Yojana (MMGSY), which has already led to the construction of 59,885 km of rural roads and the completion of maintenance work on around 46,902 km of roads. He assured that all rural roads in Bihar will be pothole-free by June this year, enhancing accessibility and transportation in remote areas.
"In the coming months, the state government will connect all unconnected habitations with high-quality rural roads to ensure year-round access," Choudhary stated. He also highlighted the broader social and economic benefits of rural road development, noting that improved infrastructure would bridge the gap between urban and rural communities and promote economic growth.
Additionally, the Rural Works Department plans to build 1,000 new small bridges in rural areas under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Setu Nirman Yojna (MGSNY). These bridges, each up to 100 meters in length, will be constructed in phases, with 600 expected to be completed by March 2025 and the remaining 400 in the next fiscal year.
Dipak Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Rural Works Department, stressed the importance of both constructing and maintaining these infrastructure projects to ensure long-term benefits for the state's rural communities.
