SAARC village project completion by June end

Colombo: Eighty per cent of work on the SAARC Friendship village in Thambiligal watte, Nawalapitiya has been completed, Power Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said. The project was proposed parallel to the SAARC Summit scheduled for July 27 to August 3 in Colombo and Kandy.

The housing scheme built at a cost of Rs. 100 million consists of 100 housing units, the Minister added. Houses are built on three designs. Each house is 550 sqft. and built on 15 perches, he said.

Arrangements are underway to commission the scheme on the inaugural day of the summit by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other state representatives attending the summit, the Minister said.

The houses will be provided to low-income families and war heroes representing all ethnic communities, the Minister said.

All the houses will have access to motorable roads, electricity, water and common amenities like a playground and community centre will also be provided. Arrangements have been made to complete the project by June end, the Minister said.
