The Shahabad region, encompassing Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, and Kaimur districts, is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the construction of the Patna-Sasaram four-lane greenfield highway. The project aims to enhance connectivity between Patna, Ara, and Sasaram while reducing travel time and improving road safety.
Construction is expected to begin in June 2024 and will be completed by 2028 under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. According to NHAI Regional Officer Yogesh Bahadur Singh, the project is in its initial phase, with the detailed project report (DPR) finalized and the bidding process underway.
The highway will be built in two phases:
Approved by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) in December 2023, the Rs 3,900 crore project will be an access-controlled highway with designated entry and exit points to facilitate smooth traffic flow. It also includes the construction of a ring road around Ara for better traffic management.
The new highway will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h and will feature a new bridge over the Sone River, approximately 10 km from the existing Koelwar bridge. The selected contractor will maintain the highway for 15 years post-construction.
Expected to drive regional economic growth, the project will create employment opportunities and provide a more efficient travel route between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
