Six Key Railway Stations in Bihar to Undergo Redevelopment, Doubling Their Handling Capacity

Six key railway stations in Bihar—Patna, Gaya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU), Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur—are set for extensive redevelopment aimed at doubling their traffic-handling capacity over the next five years. Of these, five stations fall under the jurisdiction of the East Central Railway (ECR).\

According to ECR Chief Public Relations Officer Saraswati Chandra, Patna Junction will see one of the most ambitious upgrades, including the construction of five additional terminals exclusively for suburban train services on the Hardinge Park land. The ₹95-crore project is expected to decongest Patna Junction significantly while improving suburban connectivity.

DDU, one of eastern India’s busiest rail hubs, will also have its operational capacity doubled through improved traffic management, new stabling yards, and a comprehensive remodelling of its existing yard. The redevelopment is being undertaken at an estimated cost of ₹17 crore.

Gaya Junction is being transformed into a world-class station with a ₹296-crore investment. The project includes the creation of additional stabling yards, expansion of line capacity, and the installation of advanced automatic signalling systems to ensure safer and smoother train operations.

Muzaffarpur Junction is also set for a major upgrade with a ₹442-crore investment. The redevelopment focuses on expanding yard facilities, increasing line capacity, and modernising passenger amenities to meet future traffic demands. Darbhanga station, meanwhile, will be redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), which aims to enhance passenger facilities, improve station aesthetics, and boost operational efficiency to support higher train movements.

Beyond station upgrades, the Patna–Jhajha–DDU main line is slated for capacity expansion, with plans to lay new third and fourth railway lines to double traffic operations. This is expected to ease congestion on one of Bihar’s most critical rail corridors, connecting DDU, Patna, Jhajha, and Howrah.

“These projects collectively represent a major step towards modernising Bihar’s rail network, enhancing passenger experience, and supporting the state’s growing economic and mobility needs,” the CPRO said.
