SLPA to invest $730-mn in ports expansion

Colombo: The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is going to invest about US$ 730 million for the expansion and development of the country's ports for the purpose of economic development, according to a top official of SLPA.

SLPA Managing Director W.G. Samaratunge said the ports at Colombo and Galle would be expanded and a new port will be built at Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka through a public-private partnership.

Presently, Sri Lankan ports handle about 31 million metric tonnes of trade per annum.
