Survey looks at widening of Paper Mills Road.
A survey is in progress to examine the modalities of widening Paper Mills Road in Perambur, one of the two arterial roads in the area.
The Chennai Corporation, having constructed one of the biggest bridges in the city in Perambur, had to make a lot of traffic adjustments because of the narrow link roads that led to the flyover. Madhavaram High Road and Paper Mills Road are the two arterial roads that serve as link roads for all the vehicles passing through Perambur. With both the roads being narrow because of encroachments and commercialisation, traffic bottlenecks have become the order of the day, leaving motorists high and dry.
J. Balaji, a resident, pointed out that Paper Mills Road linked several localities including Kolathur, Periyar Nagar, Sembium and SRP Colony. He complained that over the years, the road's original width of 60 feet had been whittled down to less than 30 feet.
A senior official of the civic body said the proposal is to broaden a four km-stretch of Paper Mills Road and Red Hills Road. The survey will ascertain the area that needs to be acquired, the option of Transfer of Developmental Rights and monetary compensation, he added.
K. Ramachandran, office bearer of Kolathur Federation of Residents' Welfare Association, citing the numerous surveys conducted in the past years, hoped at least this survey would be able to provide a solution to the problem.
