Survey of city road corridors soon.
In tune with the ambitious plans of Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao to ensure seamless travel facility in the form of signal free corridors, multi-level separators and elevated expressways, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking up a survey of corridors identified in the city.
The study by the engineering wing of civic body would look at all these corridors and junctions to be able to indicate the available Right of Way (RoW) with levels. This survey would be followed by consultants Lea Associates prioritising the projects from among the identified works which could be easy to take up and implement early. During a recent meeting held by the Chief Minister, it was decided to prioritise projects to the tune of Rs. 4,000 crores to Rs. 5,000 crores.
Mr. Rao has suggested taking up strategic road development of eight corridors, Uppal Junction to Sangeet Junction, Gachibowli to JNTU junction, Ambedkar Statue (Tank Bund) to Afzalgunj, Abids to Chaderghat via Koti, Habsiguda to IDA Mallapur, Hayathnagar to Nalgonda Crossroads, Chaderghat-Putlibowli-Jambagh-Nampally and Puranapul to Aramgarh via Zoo. Apart from these road corridors, he also suggested improvement of junctions such as Koti, RTC Crossroads, Secunderabad, Uppal, L.B. Nagar, Chaderghat, Putlibowli and Bahadurpura.
Lea Associates which earlier came up with the Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, would also prepare preliminary designs based on survey inputs generated by the GHMC.
The voluminous data on traffic and road conditions as part of the CTS would come handy for taking up the works, said T.S. Reddy, Director and Team Leader, LEA Associates South Asia. The present study by the GHMC on Right of Way would provide a topographical assessment of the identified corridors, road levels and how new facilities could be incorporated.
'Based on the survey inputs, feasibilities would be assessed on what feature will suit a corridor. Land availability is crucial for multi-level separators with a minimum requirement being around 150 feet to 200 feet,' he said.
