The Tamil Nadu government has shelved the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project, bringing an end to a contentious infrastructure proposal that had triggered sustained opposition from farmers and environmental groups.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, leader of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), announced the decision, reiterating his support for residents who had opposed the project, citing concerns over agricultural land, environmental impact and the displacement of farming communities.
“We are dropping Parandur airport. I stand firm with the protesters against the proposed airport,” Vijay said.
The proposed airport site, located about 70 km from Chennai, had been positioned as a major long-term aviation infrastructure project to meet the growing demand for air connectivity and support industrial and economic development in the Chennai region.
However, the project faced strong resistance because the proposed site included multi-crop agricultural lands and environmentally sensitive areas. Local farmers had raised concerns over land acquisition, livelihoods and the potential impact on water resources.
