Tata Group is preparing to manufacture battery cells using its own technology for the first time, marking a significant step toward greater self-reliance as tighter Chinese export controls push companies to localize critical technologies, according to people familiar with the matter.

Closely held Agratas Energy Storage Solutions Pvt., the group's battery venture, is setting up a pilot production line for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at its upcoming battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, the people said, requesting anonymity because the plans are not public.

The pilot line will be used to refine manufacturing processes and validate the first batch of LFP cells before the company begins commercial-scale production. A team of engineers from India, South Korea and China will oversee process optimization and quality validation during the trial phase, the people added.
