Tata Motors, a prominent manufacturer of passenger and commercial vehicles, officially launched construction on a new vehicle manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet District, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday. This greenfield facility will focus on producing high-end cars and SUVs under the Tata Motors brand, as well as its luxury brand, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
The company has committed ₹9,000 crore to the project, which will be developed over several years. Once operational, the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity exceeding 250,000 units, with production ramping up in phases over the next 5 to 7 years.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Tata Sons and Tata Motors Chairman N Chandrasekaran inaugurated the construction work, joined by state ministers, senior bureaucrats, government officials, and Tata Group representatives.
N Chandrasekaran emphasized that the Panapakkam site will serve as Tata Motors' new hub for manufacturing next-generation cars and SUVs, including electric and luxury models. He also announced plans for a suppliers’ park in the region to enhance local manufacturing capabilities and streamline supply chains.
Chief Minister Stalin praised Tata Group's legacy in nation-building and its long-standing partnership with Tamil Nadu, where the company has successfully operated several manufacturing units for years. He noted that this advanced facility is projected to create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs while fostering future-ready skills in local communities.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, operates in the UK with multiple design and engineering centers, vehicle manufacturing plants, an engine manufacturing facility, and a battery assembly center. JLR also has production facilities in China, Brazil, India, Austria, and Slovakia, supported by seven technology hubs globally.
As part of its transformation into a “House of Brands,” JLR has unveiled a new corporate identity that highlights the unique characteristics of its key brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar. Starting in 2025, Jaguar will relaunch as an all-electric brand, targeting the high-end luxury market as part of its Reimagine strategy.
