Tata Motors to Supply 40 Green Hydrogen-Powered Trucks Under MoU With VOC Port.

Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, to deploy 40 Green Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2 ICE)-powered prime movers at the port, marking a significant step towards greener port operations.

The MoU was signed recently in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Under the agreement, Tata Motors will begin trials with a hydrogen-powered prime mover, followed by the phased deployment of 40 H2 ICE-powered vehicles over the next two years. The project will be funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, highlighting the Government of India’s push to accelerate green energy adoption and develop a sustainable, future-ready maritime ecosystem, according to a company press release.

Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of VOCPA, said the introduction of green hydrogen-powered trucks is expected to significantly decarbonise cargo handling operations and set a benchmark for sustainable port-led logistics in the country. To facilitate the phased induction of these vehicles, the port is also advancing plans to set up a 2 MW electrolyser and a dedicated hydrogen refuelling station.

The initiative, along with other green fuel projects, aims to strengthen the green hydrogen ecosystem and position VOC Port as a leader in sustainable maritime infrastructure.
