Tata Power ups capacity of Kalwa-Salsette line.

Tata Power has completed uprating of transmission line 4 between the MSETCL Kalwa receiving station and the Tata Power Salsette receiving station, allowing for more power to be brought into the city.

Uprating refers to increasing capacity of a transmission line.

The uprated 220kV line will relieve loading of the Kalwa-Salsette lines and enhance transmission capacity for bringing power from outside Mumbai to the city, necessitated by an acute shortage.

The transmission network, especially the Kalwa-Salsette lines, is critically loaded most of the time. To reduce the critical loading, Tata Power had put up a proposal to Maharashtra State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) and State Transmission Utility (STU) for augmenting transmission capacity between Kalwa and Salsette.

In the first phase, additional interconnecting line no. 6 was commissioned as a short-term measure in November 2013. In the second phase, the Kalwa-Salsette line no. 3 was uprated in April 2015. In the current third phase, line No. 4 has been uprated, said a company statement.

“The uprating of existing transmission line no. 4 has been completed before the next summer sets in for Mumbai,” said Ashok Sethi, COO and executive director, Tata Power.

The company’s transmission network comprises 1,171 circuit kilometre of 220kV/110kV lines and 22 receiving stations spread across Mumbai.

The company has initiated the islanding system in Mumbai’s network, which isolates it from blackouts caused by faults in the national grid. The transmission system is the link between the generating stations and the distribution companies besides working as a corridor for power from outside Mumbai.

The uprating project was completed in record 28 days, the company statement said.
