Tata Steel is set to add 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of fresh capacity in Odisha over the long term as part of its expansion strategy. The company is currently ramping up an additional 5 MTPA, recently commissioned, to strengthen its steel production capabilities.
Initially, Tata Steel established a 3 MTPA plant at Kalinganagar in 2015-16, later expanding it with a ₹27,000 crore investment to add 5 MTPA. The latest expansion drive, expected to create 8,000 jobs, will enhance the production of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) to support the Indian automotive sector and reduce dependence on imports.
TV Narendran, Managing Director of Tata Steel, highlighted the company’s significant investments in Odisha, totaling about $10 billion over the past decade. “We have built a new steel plant in Kalinganagar and successfully acquired and revived Neelachal Ispat and Bhushan Steel, contributing to our 11 MTPA capacity in the state. Over the next decade, we plan to add another 10 million tonnes,” Narendran said at the Utkarsh Odisha 2025 Conclave.
Odisha remains Tata Steel’s largest investment hub in India due to its resource-rich geology, strategic coastline, skilled workforce, and supportive government policies. The company is also advancing infrastructure projects, including developing the Gopalpur Industrial Park and expanding Subarnarekha port to facilitate industrial growth.
Tata Steel's recent investments in Odisha include the 2022 acquisition and revival of the Neelachal Ispat Nigam plant and the 2018 purchase of the Meramandali plant in Dhenkanal, formerly Bhushan Steel, which now produces 5.6 MTPA. The company is actively working on further expansion at its Kalinganagar, Meramandali, and NINL units.
Meanwhile, Tata Steel’s Industrial Park in Gopalpur is attracting major investments, totaling ₹32,000 crore, particularly in renewable energy projects such as green hydrogen and solar manufacturing. The company’s mining division continues to drive innovation and sustainability, reinforcing Tata Steel’s long-term commitment to Odisha’s industrial growth.
