TDK Corporation from Japan to Manufacture iPhone Li-ion Battery Cells in India

In a strategic move, Apple Inc. is set to bring TDK Corporation, its global lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cell supplier, to India. Sources familiar with the development reveal that the renowned Japanese electronic component and device manufacturer will establish manufacturing operations in India to produce Li-ion battery cells specifically for iPhones assembled in the country.

The Li-ion battery cells manufactured by TDK in India will be supplied to Apple's Li-ion battery assembler, Sunwoda Electronics. Currently operational in India, Sunwoda Electronics presently imports these cells from various global markets. The collaboration with TDK marks a significant shift towards localized production, aligning with Apple's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indian market.

TDK, having acquired Hong Kong-based Amperex Technology Ltd in 2005, is making substantial investments in India, including the recent acquisition of land in Haryana. The purpose of this acquisition is to establish a manufacturing unit capable of producing a range of components, including Li-ion battery cells. The commencement of commercial production is anticipated to fulfill the supply requirements for Apple's Li-ion batteries, contributing to the ongoing localization efforts by the tech giant.

This move signifies a strategic shift in Apple's supply chain, moving towards domestic manufacturing of critical components. The collaboration between Apple, TDK Corporation, and Sunwoda Electronics is expected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce dependence on imports, and support the growth of the Indian manufacturing ecosystem. The commencement of commercial production for Li-ion battery cells is eagerly anticipated, reinforcing Apple's commitment to the Indian market and aligning with the government's 'Make in India' initiative.
