TIFR signs MoU with Hyderabad varsity

Hyderabad: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and University of Hyderabad (UOH) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to pave way for academic cooperation between the two along with collaborative research.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

An autonomous institute under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, TIFR has proposed to create a new campus for research, education and related activities with a projected investment of Rs 2,500 crore over a period of 12-15 years.

According to a statement during the meet, the Chief Minister announced that the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would lay the foundation stone for the proposed campus during his forthcoming visit to Hyderabad and the construction of the campus should start in the current year itself.

The Director of TIFR, Prof. Mustansir Barma, said this is a historic step and expressed gratitude to the Andhra Pradesh Government for its support.

TIFR submitted a proposal for land which will be within the UoH campus.

Both TIFR and UoH are expected to take up joint initiatives for mutual benefit by leveraging their respective academic programmes.

Founded in 1945, TIFR is one of India’s most prestigious research institutions conducting studies ranging from theoretical sciences to laboratory experiments in a broad spectrum of fields.

It is engaged in experiments of national and international significance. TIFR runs post-graduate programmes leading to the award of PhD.

As per plans, an Academic Advisory Committee will be formed to explore ways to foster co-operation between TIFR-Hyderabad and UoH, both in research and teaching activities. Academicians in TIFR-Hyderabad and UoH may take up joint research projects.

Both institutions expect to take up joint seminars, workshops, schools and conferences, thereby facilitating and promoting greater interactions.
