Tripunithura, Aluva & Alappuzha Railway Stations Set for Premium Food & Dining Upgrade.

The Indian Railways’ Thiruvananthapuram division under the Southern Railway is set to introduce premium dine-in restaurants at Tripunithura railway station, Aluva railway station and Alappuzha railway station, following strong response to similar outlets at Ernakulam Junction railway station and Ernakulam Town railway station.

The initiative has been taken in response to rising passenger footfall and the strategic importance of these stations within Kerala’s expanding rail network. Officials said the move is aimed at enhancing passenger experience while tapping into growing commuter demand at key transit points.

A senior railway official said Tripunithura railway station serves as an important link between the rail and metro networks and is expected to evolve into a multimodal transport hub under a proposed mini-hub project by the Tripunithura municipality. The auction for the premium branded outlet at the station is scheduled for Tuesday.

Aluva railway station, one of the busiest stations in the region, is also expected to see strong demand due to its proximity to both rail and KSRTC bus connectivity. The auction for this outlet is scheduled for Thursday, the official said.

At Alappuzha railway station, the proposed restaurant will focus on premium seafood and Kerala cuisine, aiming to offer travellers an authentic local dining experience on the platform itself, especially catering to tourism-driven traffic in the region.

For years, passengers at stations like Tripunithura had limited access to basic amenities, with only bottled water available on platforms. Local residents’ associations have welcomed the development as a long-pending improvement in commuter facilities. V C Jayendran, secretary of the Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Associations (TRURA), said the move would eliminate the need for passengers to step outside in search of food.

Tripunithura currently generates monthly revenue of over ₹1 lakh, reflecting its growing economic significance and supporting the shift towards premium services.

The Thiruvananthapuram division said the initiative is aimed at transforming passenger waiting time into a more comfortable and quality experience by partnering with branded food outlets. The new restaurants are expected to offer hygienic, high-quality dining spaces comparable to city-level establishments, enhancing overall station infrastructure and passenger satisfaction.
