TS Government Sanctions Rs. 1,227 Cr for Penganga Project
The state government recently accorded administrative sanction to Lower Penganga inter-state project for utilisation of 5.12 tmc of water for irrigation and drinking water needs in Adilabad district.
The state government accorded sanction for Rs 1,227 crore for the Lower Penganga project. The Lower Penganga Project is an inter-state project between Maharashtra and Telangana on Penganga River, which is a tributary of Godavari river.
The head works are located upstream of village Tadsaoli in Ghatanji Tabsil of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra. The dam site is about 12 km inside Maharashtra from Maharashtra-Telangana border. It was proposed to irrigate an ayacut of about 3.5 lakh acres in Maharashtra and 40,000 acres in Telangana. The canal in Telangana
portion called Right Bank Canal runs for a length of 48.60 km to irrigate 61 villages of Adilabad district.
An agreement was reached between Maharashtra and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government in 1975 itself to take up Lower Penganga Project. Joint meetings were held during 1978-84 to clear of techno-economical issues and sharing of costs of common portion of works.
Telangana will get 5.12 tmc water from Godavari from the proposed Lower Penganga. Of the total cost of the project, 88 per cent will be borne by Maharashtra and 12 pc by Telangana. Yavatmal, Hingoli and Nanded districts in Maharashtra will be benefited. Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao recently took up the project issue with his Maharashtra counterpart Fadnavis. As both the states come to an agreement on the construction of the project, the Telangana government on Saturday accorded administrative sanction. The Lower Penganga will be a boon for the farmers of Adilabad district.
