Union Budget Allocates ₹6,626 Crore for Tamil Nadu Railway Projects.

The Union Budget for fiscal year 2025-26 has earmarked ₹6,626 crore for railway projects in Tamil Nadu, a slight increase from the ₹6,326 crore allocated in 2024-25.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the budgetary outlay for Tamil Nadu's rail development in 2025-26 is 7.5 times higher than the average outlay of ₹879 crore allocated between 2009 and 2014.

Currently, 22 railway projects spanning 2,587 km, with a total cost of ₹33,467 crore, are underway in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 77 railway stations are undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ₹2,948 crore. The minister also noted that 601 works for the commissioning of Kavach Safety systems are in progress at a sanctioned cost of ₹1,460 crore.

Tamil Nadu has also made significant strides in railway electrification, with 2,242 km of railway tracks electrified—covering nearly 94% of the total tracks.

For Kerala, the budgetary outlay for rail development projects in 2025-26 stands at ₹3,042 crore, an increase to eight times the average outlay of ₹372 crore from 2009-2014.

In Kerala, eight railway projects covering 419 km and costing ₹12,350 crore are currently in progress. Additionally, 35 railway stations in the state are being redeveloped under the Amrit Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ₹2,560 crore.
