In a concerted effort to fortify infrastructure and enhance connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government has undertaken substantial initiatives over the past six and a half years. Focused on the widening, strengthening, and reconstruction of roads throughout the state, the government has successfully completed a network spanning over 5,000 kilometers, allocating a substantial budget of approximately Rs. 9,000 crore for these roadworks.
Since assuming power in 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to prioritize the enhancement of connectivity within the state. The government's directive included the connection of 26 tehsil headquarters and 153 block headquarters through two-lane roads, with an initial allocation of Rs. 2,653 crore for works covering 1,617 kilometers.
To date, the department has connected 26 tehsil headquarters and 131 block headquarters with two-lane roads, with rapid progress on connecting the remaining 22 block headquarters. Among these, 16 block headquarters have completed 99% of the work, three have reached 74%, two are at 24%, and one has achieved 49% completion.
Moreover, the PWD has proposed Rs. 174 crore for a 48-kilometer road to connect the final tehsil and 10 block headquarters with two lanes.
In parallel, for the development of routes passing through 25 cities along the international/interstate border, the government has approved 94 routes with an allocation of Rs. 2,171 crore for the development of 1,126 kilometers of roads. Of these, work on 81 routes has been completed, and 13 routes are currently underway, with six routes reaching 99% completion and seven routes at 24%.
A total of 1,928 works were approved to connect villages with a population exceeding 250 to the main road, covering a distance of less than 0.5 kilometers. A fund of Rs. 1,679 crore was allocated for these projects, with 563 works already completed. Proposals have been submitted to connect an additional 1,087 unconnected villages to the main road.
In the realm of industrial and logistic park development, Rs. 200 crore will be spent on 626 routes in the second phase. Moreover, the PWD has received a proposal of Rs. 1,922 crores from the Department of Industrial Development for 21 works related to industrial development. Under the 'Dharmarth' project, 36 works for widening, strengthening, and constructing roads have been approved, with work on a 174-kilometer road progressing with a budget of Rs. 2,316 crores.
