Vice President Rajiv Kumar Announces Imminent Completion of Kalinganagar Project Expansion by Tata Steel
Tata Steel is set to conclude the expansion of its Kalinganagar project in Odisha by December next year, with a focus on reaching a production capacity of 8 million tonnes per annum. The company initiated the second phase of expansion in November 2018, involving an investment of ₹23,500 crore to enhance capacity from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA.
Rajiv Kumar, Vice President of Operations at Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK), revealed the ambitious timeline, stating, "We are aiming to complete the project and make it operational by December end next year." The comprehensive expansion plan encompasses raw material capacity augmentation, infrastructure development, and the establishment of upstream and mid-stream facilities, including a significant cold rolling mill complex.
Highlighting key aspects of the project, Kumar emphasized the installation of the country's largest blast furnace, boasting an inner volume of 5,870 cubic metres. The expansion, known as phase 2, aims to boost flat steel production to meet the rising demands of various sectors such as automotive, general engineering, oil & gas, lifting & excavation, and other value-added segments.
Providing an update on the project's progress, the Vice President stated that approximately 80% of the work has been completed to date, with the remaining 20% progressing well. Upon completion, Tata Steel's overall annual production capacity in India will reach 26.6 MTPA, combining capacities at Kalinganagar, Jamshedpur, Meramandali, and NINL.
Kumar underscored the strategic significance of the expansion, noting that with advanced technologies being implemented, the Kalinganagar plant is poised to become one of the world's lowest-cost producers of steel. This ambitious initiative aligns with Tata Steel's commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation and meeting the evolving needs of the steel industry.
