Vyttila Mobility Hub Carriageway Repair Initiates Soon
In response to persistent criticism from commuters and concerned citizens regarding the deteriorating condition of the paver block-laden carriageway at the Vyttila Mobility Hub (VMH) and the recurring flooding of its 25-acre premises during rains, VMH Society and Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) have announced plans to expedite repair work.
Facing backlash for alleged indifference to the plight of thousands of commuters navigating through the potholed and ill-maintained premises, VMHS has joined forces with CSML to address the longstanding issues. The absence of a pedestrian footpath, particularly at the hub's potholed and poorly lit exit, has exacerbated safety concerns, prompting demands from various associations, including the Vyttila Bus Terminal Neighbours' Association, Vyttila Vikasana Samiti, and Ernakulam District Residents Associations Apex Council (EDRAAC).
These groups have been advocating for measures to enhance pedestrian safety, repair the premises, install adequate lighting, mitigate flooding, and clear the weed-infested areas. T.V. Paulose, president of the Vyttila Bus Terminal Neighbours' Association, emphasized the need for both VMHS and CSML to collaborate and rectify the issues that have persisted since the initial phase of the project was commissioned over a decade ago.
Earlier this year, Vyttila Vikasana Samiti secretary T.N. Pratapan staged a symbolic protest by floating paper boats in the flooded entry to the metro station, highlighting the perceived apathy of VMHS and other stakeholders.
In response to mounting concerns and the demand for a proper and well-lit access route from Vyttila Junction to the hub, VMHS sources disclosed that the 300-meter-long exit road from the Water Metro terminal is undergoing renovation using CSML funds. The renovation project, approved by the executive committee of VMHS, includes the construction of two culverts to prevent waterlogging on the hub premises. The stretch is expected to be closed for a month during the renovation. Additionally, CSML has issued an ultimatum to its contractor, mandating the completion of carriageway renovation work by December.
