"Wipro GE Announces ₹8,000 Crore Investment in India for Manufacturing and R&D"

In a significant move aimed at bolstering India's healthcare infrastructure, Wipro GE Healthcare has announced plans to invest over ₹8,000 crore in the country over the next five years. The investment will primarily focus on enhancing local manufacturing capabilities and ramping up research and development (R&D) initiatives.

As part of this investment, the company will be exporting its 'Made in India' PET CT Discovery IQ scanner to 15 countries, showcasing India's prowess in medical technology on a global scale. Additionally, locally manufactured products such as the Revolution Aspire CT, Revolution ACT, and MR breast coils will be supplied worldwide, further solidifying India's position as a key player in the global healthcare market.

This strategic investment not only strengthens Wipro GE Healthcare's domestic manufacturing footprint but also reinforces its supply chain resilience, catering to the growing demand both domestically and internationally.

Commenting on the announcement, Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro GE Healthcare, emphasized India's emergence as a burgeoning hub for healthcare and MedTech innovation. He highlighted the company's longstanding commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative and expressed confidence in India's potential to become a global leader in the sector.

Peter J Arduini, President and CEO of GE Healthcare, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing India's significance as a high-priority market for the company. He reaffirmed GE Healthcare's dedication to investing in India's domestic capabilities and leveraging its global expertise to drive innovation in the MedTech sector.

Chaitanya Sarawate, Managing Director and President & CEO of Wipro GE Healthcare South Asia, reiterated the company's bullish outlook on India's healthcare landscape. He emphasized the role of Wipro GE Healthcare as a local partner in India's journey towards self-reliance and its ambition to emerge as a top global manufacturing hub for medical devices.

Currently, Wipro GE Healthcare operates four manufacturing plants in Bengaluru, all of which are export-oriented. The most recent addition to these facilities was established in March 2022, with an investment exceeding ₹100 crore under the Indian government's production-linked investment (PLI) Scheme.

Wipro GE Healthcare, a joint venture between GE Precision Healthcare LLC, USA, and Wipro Enterprises Ltd, has been operating in India since 1990. Its operations extend across various countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan, underscoring its regional influence and commitment to advancing healthcare across South Asia.
