Work on Putheri rail over bridge to begin in Jan 2009

Nagercoil: The Government has allotted the sum of Rs 21.40 crore for the construction of rail over bridge at Putheri near Nagercoil and the work that would commence in January 2009 would be completed within one and half years, said Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan.

After inspecting the proposed site at Putheri he said that the public particularly the school going children and office goers from Thittuvilai, Boothapandi, Therisanamkoppu and Keeripparai were put in to untold hardship during peak hours due to the halting of buses and other vehicles for over half an hour in the railway crossing at Putheri.

When this was brought to the notice of the concerned officials, Mr. Rajan said the sum of Rs. 21.40 crore had been allotted by the Government for the construction of the rail over bridge. The total length of the bridge was 740 meters consisting of 32 pillars.

The two-way system would be implemented under the bridge and the sum of Rs. 3.50 crore would be allotted for the construction of a sub-way to decongest the traffic while constructing the rail over bridge at Putheri.

The road works from Kavalkinaru to Kaliyakkavilai were going on in full swing and the Government has allotted the sum of Rs. 10 lakh for the construction of a bridge at Nedumancadu and Rs. 2 crore for the construction of another bridge at Andithoppu. Similarly the sum of Rs. 20 lakh for the construction of a bridge at Erachakulam, Rs. 19 lakh for the construction of two bridges in Veeranamangalam – Erachakulam road, Rs. 60 lakh for the construction of three bridges at Madavalayam-Shenbagaramputhur road and steps had already been taken to construct a bridge at Thittuvilai-Manathittai road at a total estimated cost of Rs. 20 lakh, said the Minister.
