₹3,147 Crore Raipur–Dhanbad Corridor Advances, Set to Boost Chhattisgarh–Jharkhand Connectivity.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun construction on a key section of the ₹3,147 crore Pathalgaon–Kunkuri to Chhattisgarh–Jharkhand border stretch of NH-43, marking a major step in the development of the 627-km Raipur–Dhanbad economic corridor.

The stretch forms a crucial link in the corridor that is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Raipur and Dhanbad, while also strengthening road access across key industrial hubs in central and eastern India. Nearly 384 km of the corridor passes through Chhattisgarh, making the state a central component of the project.

The 104.25-km Pathalgaon–Jharkhand border section is being developed as a strategic transport link to improve connectivity between Raipur, Bilaspur, Raigarh and Korba in Chhattisgarh and the coal- and steel-rich regions of Dhanbad, Ranchi and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. The corridor is expected to ease the movement of coal, steel and other commercial freight, reducing travel time and logistics costs.

According to NHAI officials, the project is designed as a high-capacity transport spine rather than a conventional highway. It includes 382 structures such as seven major bridges, 30 minor bridges, six flyovers and one elevated viaduct. The design also incorporates 278 box culverts and multiple underpasses to facilitate movement of vehicles, pedestrians, cattle and wildlife, while minimising disruption to local settlements and ecology.

DD Parlawar, project director of NHAI’s Korba unit, described the stretch as the “backbone” of the broader corridor, noting that it would boost inter-state trade and logistics between Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

For the tribal-dominated Jashpur region, the project is expected to be particularly transformative, linking towns such as Pathalgaon, Kansabel, Kunkuri, Duldula and Jashpur into a more integrated transport network and improving access to markets and services.

Officials said the corridor could also generate employment and business opportunities by improving the movement of goods, minerals and passengers. Beyond connectivity, the project is being viewed as part of a broader push to extend high-capacity infrastructure into previously underserved regions, potentially reshaping economic linkages between central India and the mineral-rich eastern belt.
