"APSEZ to invest ₹30,000 crore in Vizhinjam port expansion, says Karan Adani, signaling a massive boost for India’s maritime infrastructure."

Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), recently said the company will invest a cumulative ₹30,000 crore in the development of the Vizhinjam seaport in Kerala, positioning it as a major global maritime hub.

Speaking at the inauguration of the second phase of the project, Adani said that with an additional investment of ₹16,000 crore under Phase II, the port’s total capacity will be expanded from about 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 5.7 million TEUs by 2029.

“This is the largest investment committed by any business house in the state of Kerala. Vizhinjam will emerge as the largest transshipment port in the Indian subcontinent and a globally competitive maritime hub,” he said.

Adani added that Vizhinjam will not only be the largest transshipment port in the region but also the most technologically advanced port in the country. “It will be the lighthouse of how future Indian ports should operate,” he said.

In his address, Adani acknowledged the role played by former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy and incumbent Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in advancing the project. He said the project received its initial momentum under Chandy’s leadership and that continuity of vision and strong administrative support under Vijayan had been critical to its execution.

“Large, transformational infrastructure projects succeed not only because of engineering excellence, but because of political clarity, administrative discipline and long-term commitment,” Adani said, adding that the chief minister’s consistent backing had helped turn a long-standing aspiration into a nationally and globally significant maritime asset.

He also credited Vijayan’s support as a key factor in the completion of the large greenfield project, calling it an invaluable asset for investors.
