Chevron, a global energy solutions provider, is investing $1 billion to establish its first major engineering and innovation center in India, named the Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE). Located near Bellandur in Bengaluru, this new hub represents a significant expansion of Chevron's R&D capabilities.
The Chevron ENGINE center will create around 600 specialized jobs by the end of 2025, with plans to increase staffing over time. The facility will focus on engineering and digital services, covering disciplines such as mechanical, chemical, computer science, and electrical engineering, as well as geology, geophysics, and environmental science.
Akshay Sahni, the incoming country head for Chevron India, described the establishment of ENGINE as a landmark event in Chevron's 145-year history. He highlighted that, aside from large technical centers in Houston and California, this will be one of the company's most significant technology hubs, joining smaller labs in Aberdeen.
"The energy sector faces the dual challenge of meeting increasing demands while transitioning to a lower-carbon future. The ENGINE center will play a crucial role in developing technology solutions to address these challenges," Sahni said in a video interview with Business Standard.
The center aims to enhance operational reliability, develop low-carbon energy solutions, and advance subsurface geology for carbon storage. Sahni emphasized that this investment reflects not only Chevron's financial commitment but also a strategic collaboration with global experts.
Chevron plans to continue leveraging third-party tech services while augmenting its capabilities with in-house expertise. "We will maintain our relationships with technology service companies, which have been invaluable in designing complex projects and operational facilities," Sahni added. "The creation of ENGINE will allow us to collaborate with more partners and also bring some work in-house."
Recently, Chevron partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation to introduce its lubricant products in India, further expanding its footprint in the country. Chevron, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, operates in over 150 countries.
