Delhi Government Sets 8-Month Deadline to Complete Delayed Barapullah Phase-III Project.

The Delhi government has set an eight-month deadline to complete the long-pending Barapullah Phase-III project, which aims to significantly improve east-west connectivity in the capital. The deadline was announced by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma during a recent high-level meeting, according to government sources.

The project, which will link Mayur Vihar Phase-I in East Delhi with AIIMS in South Delhi via a 3.5-km elevated corridor, recently cleared its last major hurdle with the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee granting the final tree-related clearance. The corridor will integrate with the existing flyover near Sarai Kale Khan, helping to decongest key traffic routes such as NH-24, DND Flyway, and Ring Road.

Officials said work on the project has resumed, with site allocation completed for fabrication activities and tenders floated for tree removal. The tree felling and transplantation will be conducted under the supervision of the forest department.

In line with environmental directives, a detailed re-survey of trees was carried out along the project alignment. Of the 155 trees under the central forest division, 10 will be felled, 34 transplanted, and 111 retained with light pruning. In the south forest division, 75 trees will be cut, 53 transplanted, and 50 preserved.

Initiated in April 2015, the project was originally scheduled for completion in October 2017 but faced repeated delays due to land acquisition hurdles, environmental clearance issues, flooding, and poor inter-departmental coordination. Officials noted that since taking office, Minister Verma has actively pushed to revive and fast-track the project.

Designed with multiple environmental safeguards, the corridor will include a pier-supported elevated structure and an extradosed bridge to minimize impact on the Yamuna’s active floodplain. The project will feature three lanes in each direction, eight loops (four each at Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan), along with dedicated cycle tracks and footpaths.
