The Delhi government has set a firm target of December 2025 for the completion of the long-pending Phase III of the Barapullah flyover. This crucial infrastructure project aims to significantly enhance connectivity between Mayur Vihar Phase I in East Delhi and AIIMS in South Delhi.
Upon completion, the flyover will integrate with the existing Barapullah corridor near Sarai Kale Khan, promising to substantially reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion for lakhs of daily commuters in the national capital.
Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) minister, Parvesh Sahib Singh, inspected the project site on Monday and stated that construction work is progressing at a rapid pace. He expressed confidence that the remaining tasks would be finished within the newly set timeline. "Our target is to operationalise this flyover by December 2025. It is an important infrastructure project for Delhi, which suffered from neglect and inaction for several years. Since taking charge, we prioritised it and ensured progress on multiple fronts," said Minister Verma.
According to officials, approximately 90 per cent of the construction work on the flyover is already complete. However, the remaining work has been stalled awaiting pending approvals from the forest department for the relocation of around 250 trees.
Minister Verma attributed the previous delays to the preceding AAP government, stating, "They did not release payments to contractors on time, nor did they initiate the process of tree relocation. As a result, this critical project was delayed for years, with escalated costs. We are actively working to complete the remaining work soon."
Verma further highlighted the current BJP government's efforts, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in actively coordinating with the forest department to obtain the necessary clearances for tree relocation. "We are hopeful that the required approvals will be received soon, allowing the final phase of construction to commence," he added.
Emphasizing the project's significance, Verma stated, "For us, this is not just a project, but a significant step in the development of Delhi. Our priority is to ensure no project suffers from red tape or neglect, and all pending infrastructure projects are completed on time."
