DMRC Invites Bids to Procure 500 Million Units of Renewable Energy Annually.
In a significant step towards enhancing its clean energy footprint, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for the supply of 500 million units (MU) of renewable energy annually to power its operations, officials announced on Sunday.
The DMRC is looking to select a solar power developer to establish a grid-connected captive generating plant equipped with a battery energy storage system anywhere in India. The selected developer will supply energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), with the project slated for completion within 15 months of the contract award.
Currently, the Delhi Metro meets about one-third of its power needs through renewable sources, procuring roughly 350 MU annually from the Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh and generating 40 MU via rooftop solar installations across its stations, depots, and residential complexes. During daylight hours, renewable energy accounts for nearly 65 percent of its total consumption.
With the new initiative, DMRC aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its overall power mix to over 60 percent, which will also cover the energy demands of its upcoming Phase-IV network. “If achieved, it will become the first metro system in the country to source more than half of its total energy from clean sources,” the statement added.
This move underscores DMRC’s commitment to sustainable operations and reducing its carbon footprint through increased adoption of renewable energy.
