Goa govt terminates UTL’s contract

Mumbai: The Goa government, has in-principle decided to terminate the contract with the Bangalore-based United Telecoms for not meeting the deadline for establishment of broadband network across the tourist state.

Goa's IT Minister, Dayananad Narvekar said that the IT department has issued a show-cause notice to UTL. The company, according to the minister, has not even completed 25 per cent of the work and therefore has no justification in asking government any extension.

'The government, after termination of the contract will take over the project and run the same on its own,' he maintained.

The termination of contract will now delay the project; the first phase of which was supposed to be completed by the year end.

The leader of the opposition, Manohar Parrikar had alleged that the government has faltered in signing an agreement with the UTL and charged that there is a corruption angle to the same.
