Green Energy Push: HPCL to Build 24 Compressed Biogas Plants.

Green Energy Push: HPCL to Build 24 Compressed Biogas Plants.

Indian state fuel retailer Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) is set to invest approximately ₹2,000 crore ($231.04 million) over the next two to three years to establish 24 new compressed biogas (CBG) plants. This announcement was made by a company official on Friday, signaling a significant push towards cleaner energy solutions.

This initiative aligns with India's broader environmental goals. As one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, the nation is actively exploring ways to utilize organic waste for cleaner fuel production. This effort is a key component of India's strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve its ambitious 2070 net-zero target.

HPCL Renewable and Green Energy Ltd, a subsidiary spearheading this project, has already successfully established two such plants. According to Mohit Dhawan, chief executive of the subsidiary, the upcoming 24 plants will each have a daily production capacity of 10-15 tons of CBG. These plants will leverage a variety of organic feedstocks, including agricultural residue, cattle dung, and sewage water, to produce the compressed biogas.
