Helsinki plans light rail link to boost development around Malmi airport.

The Viikki–Malmi link will connect to Helsinki’s tram line at Malmi, as well the Jokeri Light Rail, which is presently under construction. It will also have intersections with two lines that are being planned for the future: the Tiederatikka–Jokeri Light Rail 2 and the Vantaa Tram systems.

It is still yet to be decided if the northern end of the line will run to either Malmi station or Jakomäki in the Suurmetsä neighbourhood, further to the northest.

The two route options are not mutually exclusive, but are likely to involve two separate developments, depending on land development close to the planned line.

In a press release, Helsinki government says the project will encourage housing construction  and lead to a growth in employment.

The Viikki-Malmi light rail masterplan is due to be completed by the end of 2020, with construction aiming to start in 2027 and the opening of the line set for some time in the early 2030s.
